About us

The Petrou Family have been in the fish frying trade since 1968 and serving the people of Chatteris for over 25 years. Mark and Peter started the Petrou Brothers shop when their Father retired and have served well over a million portions of the nations favourite meal from their site in West Park Street. They do not like to make a sale - they prefer to make a customer and it’s by sticking to strict values and embracing new frying technology that sets them apart from most other fryers. They have studied the history of fish and chips back to it's humble beginings nearly 150 years ago and are committed to raising standards within the industry to when it comes bringing fish and chips into the 21st century. Their fish and chips contain incredibly low levels of saturated fat compared generations gone by.

The Petrou Brothers source their fish responsibly from sustainable stocks marry it to trusty spud lifted from the fields around their shop in the heart of fenland and simply clean, cut and fry them to perfection. There are no hidden nasties - in fact even the flour for their batter is milled just for them. They have introduced new species to their menu as cod prices continue to rise making sure fish and chips remains affordable food for the masses.

Mark has been described by the Daily Mail food critic Tom Parker-Bowls (son of Camilla) as a 'Fish Frying Evangelist' when he visited his shop in 2006 and was one the fourteen judges to award Mark the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Crown. T.V. appearances on Ready Steady Cook, The Alan Titchmarsh show and GMTV gave Mark the platform he needed to spread the word about just how far fish and chips had come. Famous guests to his shop since have included TV chefs Brian Turner and Gary Barnshaw amongst many, who are converts to the brothers' less than 8% fat fish and chips, complementing the impressive shop, dedicated staff and delicious food.

The story doesn't end there. The Petrou Brothers have opened their second site in the Beautiful Cathedral City of Ely. Mark has spent much of the last twelve months sharing his expertise working with some very big names in the food business. He has also created an online community for fish fryers called chippychat.co.uk. and written for several magazines.
